OBAMA'S MIDDLE EAST
PEACE INITIATIVE

According to sources close to America's president-elect, Barack Obama is planning to pursue an ambitious peace plan in the Middle East involving:

  1. Israel's complete withdrawal from the West Bank to its pre-1967 borders.

  2. Restoration of the Golan Heights to Syria.

  3. The return of East Jerusalem to the Palestinians and its establishment as the capital of the Palestinian state.

  4. The unconditional and total surrender of all claims to the so-called Temple Mount (including, presumably, the Wailing Wall).

  5. The recognition of the Palestinians "Right of Return."

In return, Israel would receive "recognition" as a state not just by the Arabs, but the entire Islamic world.

Essentially, the plan is a "rip-off" of a 2002 Saudi peace initiative endorsed by the Arab League and backed by Tzipi Livni, leader of Israel's ruling Kadima party.

Supposedly, the five initiatives listed above are to serve only as a "starting point" for negotiations; but if anything, they represent not so much a "starting point" for the Israelis, as a "starting point" for the Arabs, who are very much hoping to negotiate away Israel's status as a Jewish nation, and turn it into a "secular state."

On a visit to the Middle East last July, the president-elect is reported to have said privately to one of his senior advisors that it would be "crazy" for Israel to refuse this deal - a deal that could "give them peace with the Muslim world."

And it isn't just Israelis like Livni who are willing to start negotiations with the Arabs on the basis of the Saudi (now, Obama) plan, there is also Shimon Perez and Ehud Barak of the Labor Party, Ehud Olmert of the Kadima, and many more besides.

In addition to all these Israelis, there is a so-called bipartisan group of senior foreign policy advisers closely linked to the in-coming Obama Administration who are pushing this plan, among whom are Lee Hamilton, the former co-chairman of the Iraq Study Group, Zbigniew Brzezinski, a Democrat former national security adviser and Brent Scowcroft, a Republican former national security adviser. These advisers have told Obama that he should lose no time in pursuing this policy while he enjoys maximum goodwill in the Islamic world.

The Palestinian Authority is also urging President-elect Barack Obama to put his prestige behind the initiative as a means to ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and in a brilliant display of public relations, it ran Hebrew-language ads this week in Israel's four major newspapers endorsing the so-called "Obama Plan" and calling on Israelis to support it.

And it's not just left-wing elements in Israel and the United States who are supporting this plan, but "fundamentalists" in the Islamic world - and there is evidence that people from the Obama transition team have already met with these "fundamentalists." For example, in an interview published Tuesday in the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper, Dr. Ahmad Yousef, political adviser to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, said senior Hamas figures have held secret meetings with advisers to Barack Obama in Gaza.  According to Yousef, the Obama-Hamas talks were ongoing during the U.S. election campaign:

"We were in contact with a number of Obama's aides through the Internet, and later met with some of them in Gaza, but they advised us not to reveal this information as it may influence the elections or become manipulated by McCain's campaign."

All this is especially interesting in view of the DIRECT and GROWING ties that Hamas has with Iran, to say nothing of the ties that Hamas has developed between itself and Hezbollah in Lebanon. OBAMA'S ADVISORS APPARENTLY BELIEVE THAT PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST (AND SPECIFICALLY BETWEEN THE PALESTINIANS AND ISRAEL) CAN ONLY BE REACHED ON A ROAD THAT RUNS THROUGH TEHRAN.

As a result, Obama's is willing to deal with Iran over its nuclear ambitions in turn for Iran's support and - ipso facto - Hamas' and Hezbollah's support insofar as his peace initiative is concerned.

MJ Rosenberg, the Director of Israel Policy Forum's Washington Policy Center, reports, however, that the above peace initiative is virulently opposed by Israel's settlers in the West Bank and on the Golan. For instance, last weekend some 20,000 settlers (and their supporters) descended on Hebron to defend their right to remain in a Palestinian home they had seized. He says that the army (the IDF) will ultimately move to evict them - which makes the IDF the enemy insofar as the settlers are concerned, and that they (the settlers) will fight them. Indeed, Rosenberg says that fighting between the IDF and the settlers has already broken out.

Rosenberg, an American Jew and a supporter of Obama's peace initiative, goes on to say:

"This whole business of attacking soldiers is hard for an American to fathom. In the 1950s and 1960s, Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson all had to send in troops to break the back of segregation in the Deep South. The segregationists were every bit as entrenched as the settlers--and they were armed--but once the president sent in the troops, resistance collapsed. Americans do not physically attack their own soldiers. Besides, the U.S. show of force was so overwhelming that the segregationists understood that they were beat."

He complains:

"What's wrong with Israel? Has the occupation so degraded attitudes toward the military that settlers feel that they can spit on them, throw rocks at them, or worse, and get away with it? Talk about democracy run amok."

Finally, Rosenberg defiantly suggests that -

"This is not America's problem. Our problem is to resolve a conflict that harms American interests throughout the Muslim world, and has done so since 1967. Perhaps the American interest hurt most of all is Israel's long-term prospects for survival.

"Time is running out. The Arab Peace Initiative presents an unprecedented opportunity. Obama should run with it."

WHAT ALL OF THIS DEMONSTRATES IS THAT IN OBAMA'S MIND, PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST IS TIED TO FORCING ISRAEL INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE PALESTINIANS THAT WILL STRIP ISRAEL OF THE WEST BANK, THE GOLAN HEIGHTS, EAST JERUSALEM, THE TEMPLE MOUNT, GIVE THE PALESTINIANS THE "RIGHT OF RETURN," AND FORCE ISRAEL TO LIVE WITH A NUCLEAR-ARMED IRAN.

This is, however, the kind of "STUFF" that will enrage not only the settlers in Israel, but American evangelicals as well; the kind of "STUFF" that could lead to Binyamin Netanyahu's victory in the upcoming Israeli elections, which in turn will cause a disaster for Obama that will be unprecedented in its magnitude.
