AND EARTH FIRST

INTRODUCTION

Carrie McLaren writes in the magazine, Stay Free:

"In the sci-fi film They Live, urban drifter John Nada unwittingly discovers that a hideous cabal is secretly ruling America ... Nada happens upon special sunglasses that allow him to ... (see the hidden messages of the cabal). More importantly ... he can see that business people and government leaders - who appear to be human - are, in fact, aliens."

Referring to the United States, McLaren continues:

"They Live, as goofy as it is, makes sense in a way (with regard to what's happening in America today) ... (However) the powers that be are (not aliens) but real people and they are not sustained by secret teams of evildoers but BY EVERY DAY INSTITUTIONS AND THEIR STAFFS. Peer behind most conspiracies and you will find people just 'doing their jobs'."

Is that what you're doing today? - just doing your job?

A HIDDEN CABAL

That there really is a "hideous cabal" that is "ruling America" (and, indeed, the entire world) is true! - just as Nada imagined it to be. And the fact that the members of this cabal are a vicious, grasping, mean-spirited coterie of brutes and malefactors is equally true - people who, as Michael Parenti puts it, want nothing more than EVERYTHING:

"... all the choice lands, forests, game, herds, harvests, mineral deposits and precious metals of the earth; all the wealth, riches, and profitable returns; all the productive facilities, gainful inventiveness, and technologies; all the surplus value produced by human labor; all the control positions of the state and other major institutions; all public supports and subsides; privileges and immunities; all the protections of the law with none of its constraints; all the services, comforts, luxuries, and advantages of civil society with none of the taxes and costs ... ALL THE REWARDS AND NONE OF THE BURDENS."

A TINY PERCENT OF THE POPULATION

But, as McLaren said, the members of this elite are not aliens, nor are they the so-called Illuminati, nor the Freemasons, nor the Jews, nor the "House of Windsor," nor the "Cliveden Set," nor any other such "thing." They are the very people with whom the leaders of the evangelical church have allied themselves in the Republican Party - a tiny group of the ultra rich who by their PURPOSEFUL and very DELIBERATE control of the governing boards of America's major corporations, the country's top political leadership, its top judiciary, its top government bureaucrats, and even the top members of the military form a tightly-knit and relatively impenetrable network of wealth and power. Together, they constitute no more than .00019 percent of the population of the United States. Indeed, according to Michael Zweig of Cornell University,

"The entire U.S. elite could easily be seated in Yankee Stadium, which holds 57,000 people." [Please see our article, "The Elite, Money, and the End of Days."]

These are the people who, in the passé jargon of socialist rhetoric, form the "RULING CLASS." They are an "elite of power" who, as the late Professor C. Wright Mills of Colombia, said -

"... by their decisions ... set up and break down the destinies of others ..."

Indeed, they are the very people about whom President Eisenhower warned the country in his "Farewell Address to the Nation" in 1961: an arcane, murky clique of the ultra-rich he labeled the "Military-Industrial Complex."

And the lackey's who sustain this "hideous cabal" of malefactors and wrongdoers? - they are, as McLaren said, "every day people" doing their "everyday jobs" in companies like General Electric, Ford, GM, etc. and in various government bureaucracies, in our schools and universities, in our military, and in law enforcement. These are "ordinary people" doing "ordinary jobs" who close their eyes to their very real participation in "THE SYSTEM" - the kind of people who kept the trains running on time in Hitler's Germany while closing their eyes to the human cargo they were carrying to the death camps at Treblinka and Sobibar.

JUST DOING THEIR JOBS

For example, take the "every day people" who are doing their "every day jobs" in law enforcement; and particularly in the FBI: in the world of Hollywood fantasy, the agents of the FBI are a group of cerebral, calculating do-gooders whose sole job is to protect American citizens from criminals, mass murderers, mad scientists, and tall dark men in black, and who protect the rights of pacifists, scholars, and young radicals to have their say alongside business leaders, politicians and men and women of wealth.

The real fact of the matter is, however, the FBI has another more hidden job, and one that is much more vital to the smooth functioning of elite power in the country than is its more mundane job of catching criminals: and that is to spy on, attack and, if necessary, destroy the groups and individuals that don't "toe the party line" that's been established by America's elite. Specifically, the FBI has been authorized to "EXPOSE, DISRUPT, MISDIRECT, DISCREDIT, or otherwise NEUTRALIZE" the activities of those who oppose the elites. [And these are the EXACT words and phrases - i.e., "expose," "disrupt," "misdirect," "discredit," and "neutralize" - used in the "counter-intelligence" (COINTELPRO) directive authorizing the FBI to use these tactics.]

My heavens! - think about that! Where is there any freedom for ordinary people in all of that? Apparently, the only "freedom" we have as Americans is to agree with the policies of the ultra rich.

Most Americans - at least those who know anything about COINTELPRO (Counter-Intelligence Program) - believe that it was disbanded in the 1970s. But that's nonsense! COINTELPRO'S DEMISE WAS IN NAME ONLY, for many of its strategies persist today - and in fact, have been widely expanded by John Ashcroft's USA Patriot Act and ancillary legislation which has allowed the FBI to greatly enlarge its "target list."

RECLAIM THE STREETS (RTS)

And it's not that difficult to get on the FBI's "enemies list:" take what the FBI has done to a rather innocuous group called "Reclaim the Streets" (RTS). RTS was recently listed on the FBI's website as a "left-wing terrorist" organization. And what had RTS done to earn the FBI's ire? - it had thrown impromptu street parties, blocking off parts of the Lower East Side in New York City and dancing in the streets. (RTS was formed to protest the draconian anti-assembly laws in New York). There have never been any broken windows at the RTS block parties, no rocks thrown, no violence of any kind; only dancing and very savvy civil disobedience. Nonetheless, RTS has been branded a "terrorist" organization. My heavens! - using that definition, Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference would have been branded a "terrorist organization;" they perfected civil disobedience to an art form.

Obviously, then, it doesn't take much to be listed as a "terrorist organization." With a flick of their organizational finger, the FBI has the power to brand a group as such with all the opprobrium and infamy that goes along with it - and in the process, making those connected to RTS "terrorists by association." Now that's being "DISRUPTED" and "DISCREDITED" "big time."

Moreover, it's not just RTS that the FBI has been "disrupting" and "discrediting" across the country; there are many, many others - especially groups that are in any way connected to the anti-globalization protests of recent years. Of course, one might ask, What does anti-globalism and opposition to "free trade" (as practiced by the elites) have to do with al-Qaeda or the "War on Terrorism" - UNLESS ONE UNDERSTANDS THE "WAR ON TERRORISM" TO BE A WAR DIRECTED AGAINST ANYONE WHO OPPOSES THE ECONOMIC INTERESTS OF AMERICA'S RULING ELITE. But be careful here! - by asking that question, one runs the risk of being labeled a "terrorist" or a "terrorist sympathizer" himself. One has to be very, very careful about such things today.

McLaren goes on to say:

"If you think we're making all of this up, you can see the evidence for yourself. Some of the COINTELPRO files have been released under the Freedom of Information Act and published 'as is' in collections such as Nelson Blackstock's COINTELPRO and Warren Churchill's and Jim Vander Wall's COINTELPRO Papers."

JUDI BARI, DARRYL CHERNEY AND EARTH FIRST

You still doubt? - well, take what happened to Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney, who had the temerity to stand up against the lumber industry which has been trying for some time now to "clear cut" Northern California's Redwood forests. [NOTE: Please consider as you read what follows that what happened to Bari and Cherney occurred more than ten years ago - without the "benefit" of today's brutish USA Patriot Act. Who knows what the ultimate outcome of this case would have been if it had been prosecuted today. Bari and Cherney might very well have "been disappeared." We are telling you about this case because it reveals "so nicely" the BLATANT and HORRIFIC methodologies employed by the FBI to protect its "corporate clients."]

Bari and Cherney got themselves into trouble with the FBI because they were goading the economic interests of Maxxam Corp., run by the notorious corporate raider Charles Hurwitz - famous for the LEGALIZED THEFT of $1.6 billion from taxpayers that was needed to bail out his looted Texas savings and loan enterprise - and another equally nefarious timber mogul, Harry Merlo of Louisiana-Pacific Lumber Company.

Both Bari and Cherney are members of Earth First! Now I know what most Christians will say about that - that Earth First is a "New Age" group that worships the earth goddess Gaia; but - to put it bluntly - that's just so much BULLSH-T! It's the kind of propaganda that permeates evangelical Christian circles as a result of their disgusting alliance with Big Business - and the extent that such thinking has taken hold on the church today indicates the degree to which the church has been taken over by the corporate elites.

The fact is, a great deal of the propaganda that links environmental groups like Earth First to Gaia has been "bought and paid for" by industry groups who despise the environmental movement. These groups figure that the best way to get "dumb" Christians (which is exactly what the elites think of Christians) to join them in an attack against the "enviros" is to link the Environmental Movement to the "New Age" Movement - as if anyone who cares for the environment is into "witchcraft" of some sort or another. AN ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION

Getting back to Bari and Cherney, on May 24, 1990, a pipe bomb exploded under the driver's seat of Judi Bari's Subaru wagon as she drove through Oakland, California - shattering her pelvis and nearly killing her. Her passenger and fellow Earth First environmental activist, Darryl Cherney, was less severely injured, but equally terrified. Obviously, someone had tried to assassinate them - someone who had reason to hate them very much.

That was scary enough! But what happened next was even more frightening: the FBI goaded the Oakland police into arresting them for their own attempted assassination, as wacky as that sounds! Someone had tried to assassinate Judi and Darryl, and whoever it was had enough "pull" to get the FBI to pin the attempted assassination on them.

This is the kind of thing that happens in the upside-down, very weird world of those who challenge the elites. It's what happened to Bobby Seale and the Black Panther Party; it's what happened to Martin Luther King; it's what happened to Geronomo Pratt, ad infinitum, ad nauseum. What happened to Judi and Darryl was this: soon after the explosion, senior FBI agents from the San Francisco Terrorism Squad arrived at the scene. They told responding Oakland police officers that Judi and Darryl were violent members of a known "terrorist group" (there's that all-encompassing word again), Earth First, and that they were probably the ones who had made the bomb.

A "highly trained" Bureau bomb technician from the FBI's San Francisco office, Special Agent Frank Doyle, inspected the blown-up car and quickly proclaimed to the other investigators his opinion that the bomb had sat on the "rear seat and floorboard," behind the driver's seat, where he said it would have been visible to the occupants when they loaded their gear into the back seat. Ergo, said Doyle, it was their bomb.

Both Judi and Darryl were then booked on charges of "knowing possession and transportation of a bomb," although the car was Judi's, and Darryl demonstrably was riding with her only by chance. The two were lumped together by police and the FBI throughout because in reality, evidence was irrelevant; headlines were the objective.

TWO OBSERVATIONS AND THREE QUESTIONS

Two observations and three questions naturally arise from all this; first, the two observations: (1) there was NOT a shred of evidence that either Judi or Darryl were violent people - and neither the FBI nor the Oakland police ever produced any information (or even rumors) to that effect.

Judi and Darryl had been on their way to Santa Cruz, where they had been scheduled to speak and sing folk songs (she fiddled and he played the guitar) as part of a recruitment drive for a "Redwood Summer" campaign of NONVIOLENT civil disobedience aimed at bringing activists and students from around the country together to protest the attempt by Hurwitz and Merlo to clear cut California's cathedral forests.

Now, the second observation: The FBI Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Office at the time of the assassination attempt was Richard Held, son of one of J. Edgar Hoover's top lieutenants from the "salad days" of COINTELPRO. Held Jr. was himself a well-known COINTELPRO maven whose history of dirty tricks included helping to disrupt the American Indian Movement (AIM), frame Black Panther leader Geronomo Pratt, and undermine the Puerto Rican independence movement in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In the light of all this, it's not much of a jump to suppose that Held was up to his old tricks.

The police make that kind of a "leap of faith" all the time with suspects in recognizing "an established pattern of criminal behavior" in a suspect's past. But if this technique is "good enough for the goose, then it's good enough for the gander." And if that's the case, one cannot help but wonder whether or not Held was involved in his old "established pattern of criminal behavior" in "disrupting," "misdirecting," and "discrediting" what he considered to be "enemies" of the "established order." After all, if he could do it with regard to AIM, Geronomo Pratt, and the leaders of the Puerto Rican Independence Movement, why not with Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney? In today's world, "three strikes and you're out," the assumption being that three strikes (convictions) is enough to establish "a pattern of criminal behavior" which cannot be broken. Held had already had three strikes. Judi and Darryl were his fourth strike at bat.

Finally, the three questions: (1) How did the FBI arrive at the scene so quickly? - they arrived only minutes after the explosion, all the way from San Francisco, at least a 45 minute drive from the scene of the assassination attempt. (2) How did they know so quickly that Judi and Darryl were the victims? - the Oakland police didn't tell them. And (3) how did they arrive so abruptly at the conclusion that Judi and Darryl were the ones supposedly responsible for the explosion?

One would have to be excused for thinking that there seemed to be a certain degree of very sinister "expectation" evidenced in all this, almost as if the FBI had been "lying in wait," anticipating events with "bomb experts" in tow.

THE ATTACK AGAINST JUDI
AND DARRYL PICKS UP STEAM

Come on now! Think about it! - three hours after the explosion, while Judi was still on the operating table and Darryl was still lying in his hospital bed, the FBI arrested both Judi and Darryl without even bothering to interview them beforehand? Someone somewhere wanted to "get things rolling fast" - after all, one would think that it would normally take much more time (even for the FBI) to turn a victim of a crime into the crime's perpetrator. The police gave Dr. Sam Shepherd more time than that. Three hours? - that's awful fast for that kind of an operation, unless it was planned for in advance. Come on now, use your common sense here! - three hours? That's way too fast. Being a Christian doesn't mean that we have to take leave of our common sense.

The charges against them were announced to the public the next morning, drawing top stories of dreadful "eco-terrorism" from coast to coast. A police application for an "enhancement" of the regular bail, from $12,000 to $250,000, stated that Judi was a danger to the community. But, again, it was all so absurd! As we have already indicated, the police and the FBI were NEVER able to produce even one shred of evidence that either Judi or Darryl were violent people. [Interestingly, all three original color-coded copies of the bail enhancement request forms, like a number of other potentially revealing documents in the case, were "lost."]

What was going on here? At the very least, all this gives some evidence as to where the FBI's priorities are - certainly not with finding and arresting real murderers, but "carrying water for the elites;" in this case, for the lumber industry: specifically, for Charles Hurwitz and Harry Merlo. And at worst, well, it doesn't take a Ph.D. to connect the dots.

The fact is, the FBI had been trying for some time to infiltrate Earth First circles in order to - in the words of an undercover agent who accidentally recorded himself talking to his handlers - "POP" its co-founder, Dave Forman, and others associated with the group.

THE POWER OF ELITE PROPAGANDA TO BRAND
PEOPLE AS A "DANGER TO THE COMMUNITY"

Now - and this is important - you need to ask yourself, Why was (is) the FBI so fixated on the environmentalists? Why have they and their elite masters spent so much time and effort to demonize them (just like they did with Martin Luther King) - and so much so that one would think today that ALL environmentalists are nothing more than freaks and "bomb throwers," ragged, unkempt pot smokers, "New Age tree huggers," anti-Christian bigots and practitioners of various forms of witchcraft. Indeed, by now - after almost twenty-five years of continuing, incessant propaganda - these pictures have been all but FIXED in Christian minds; mention groups like Earth First, the Sierra Club, etc. and these images appear in the brains of most Christians almost as a Pavlovian response.

BUT THESE ARE IMPLANTED IMAGES! - courtesy of the elite's propaganda machine. They are not images that should "naturally" spring to mind, at least insofar as the teachings of the New Testament are concerned. What's so "unnatural" or wrong about loving the environment while at the same time worshipping God. Are not the trees, the mountains, the lakes and the forests all part of God's wonderful creation? And what a marvelous creation it is! - far more profound than anything man could come up with. Jesus said:

"... Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

"AND YET I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT EVEN SOLOMON IN ALL HIS GLORY WAS NOT ARRAYED LIKE ONE OF THESE." (Matt. 6:28-29)

Such a small thing - the lilies of the field; nonetheless, they declare God's glory far more adequately than all the cathedrals and churches that man has ever built. It is through this creation that God makes Himself visible to man. That's what the Bible says, that -

"... the invisible things of him (i.e., God) from the creation of the world are clearly seen, BEING UNDERSTOOD BY THE THINGS THAT ARE MADE (i.e., by His creation), even his ETERNAL POWER and GODHEAD ..." (Rom. 1:20)

The creation - the very creation that Earth First and the Sierra Club are trying so desperately to protect from the grasping hands of men like Charles Hurwitz and Harry Merlo - is God's TESTIMONY to His "ETERNAL POWER" and "GODHEAD." And to say so is NOT tantamount to embracing the worship of Gaia or any other such thing, as the elite's propaganda seems to suggest, and as their insipid allies in the church have come to believe; it's not to put the creation above the Creator.

PLUNDERING GOD'S CREATION

But the business elites who seek to PLUNDER God's creation for the sake of "filthy lucre" - in other words, to get as much as they can from the earth as quickly as they can, leaving nothing in their wake but emptiness and desolation - see such sentiments as obstacles in their path to ever greater riches. The earth doesn't belong to God, it belongs to them. The very real fact of the matter is, as Michael Parenti has pointed out, the elites consider God's creation to be theirs; EVERYTHING in it -

"... all the choice lands, forests, game, herds, harvests, mineral deposits and precious metals of the earth ..."

That's what Harry Merlo thinks too; he says:

"IT'S OURS. It's out there, and we want it all, and we want it NOW."

Again, that's EVERYTHING!! - and they have enlisted Christian evangelicals in their effort to press that claim using slick, sophisticated Washington PR firms like Hill & Knowlton - a company notorious for concocting the lie during the first Gulf War that Saddam Hussein's storm troopers were stealing babies from their incubators in Kuwait. THE ELITES DON'T CARE ABOUT GOD, AND THEY
CERTAINLY DON'T CARE ABOUT THEIR WORKERS

The elites could care less about God, or about the "witchcraft" that the "enviros" are supposed to be into; they could give a whit whether one worships God or Gaia. It makes no difference to them. The god they worship is MONEY, and there are BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars at the end of the rainbow here - and ragged little groups like Earth First are standing in the way, preventing people like Hurwitz and Merlo from getting their hands on those billions.

Moreover, to say that Hurwitz and Merlo care much about whether loggers or those who work in the mills have jobs or not is just plain fanciful. They don't care - and that was confirmed when efforts by Judi and Earth First to bring environmentalists and timber workers together against Hurwitz and Merlo began to bear fruit; specifically when Earth Firsters proposed that the county take over several mills that Hurwitz and Merlo had closed and operate them strictly for the benefit of the workers and their families. This, of course, gives the lie to the propaganda that Hurwitz and Merlo (along with their PR firm Hill & Knowlton) were leveling against Earth First, i.e., that they didn't care about workers or that they wanted to stop logging in toto. That NEVER was the case. I say again: THAT NEVER WAS THE CASE.

WHO ARE THE REAL PRACTITIONERS OF VIOLENCE?

Finally, the allegations that Bari and Earth First were into "tree-spiking" and "monkey wrenching" were so much balderdash! They were not, and NO evidence ever surfaced that they were. They practiced NON-VIOLENCE; it was a kind of "religion" to them. It was the timber interests who were "into violence" - big time!

For instance, eight months before the attempted assassination, Darryl, Judi, her children, and several others were run off the road into a ditch, Karen Silkwood-style. Miraculously, they escaped serious injury, even though Judi's car was totaled. And that wasn't the end of it; Judi also received a photo with rifle cross-hairs drawn over her face. A Sheriff's Department sergeant told her, however, that they didn't have enough manpower to deal with the case. "If you turn up dead," he said, "then we'll investigate." Clearly, the police were on the side of those who signed their paychecks - and ultimately, that was Hurwitz and Merlo.

CHRISTIANS HAVE BEEN "BOUGHT OFF"

Sadly, these facts make little or no difference to most Christians who have by now - thanks to PR firms like Hill & Knowlton - a picture of environmentalists as enemies of Christ so CEMENTED in their brains that there is little or nothing that can be done to erase that image - SUCH IS THE POWER OF ELITE PROPAGANDA.

Christians have allowed the elites to DEMONIZE the environmentalists in the EXACT same way that they have allowed them to DEMONIZE the poor - all in DIRECT contravention to the clear teaching of the Scriptures concerning the poor,

"And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God" (Luke 6:20)

AND in violation of God's command in Genesis that man should tenderly CARE for His creation:

"And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress (i.e., tenderly CARE for) it and to keep it." (Gen. 2:15)

Indeed, one would think today that someone (anyone) who sides with the poor and who "tenderly cares" for God's creation has given himself over to socialism and / or witchcraft and the worship of Gaia - AND ALL OF YOU CHRISTIANS WHO ARE READING THIS MATERIAL KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT HERE. You've seen this propaganda in your churches, and if you say you haven't, then you've perfected the art of not seeing the obvious to a very high level. Come on now, you've seen the elite's propaganda scattered about in the church; for example, the kind of literature about the poor that insinuates, as Katherine Yurica has pointed out, that the -

"... poor, the sick, and the weak are so situated because God's wrath has been visited upon them - THEY ARE THE 'WICKED' OF THIS EARTH and they deserve the wrath of God."

Come on now, isn't this exactly what so-called Christian leaders like Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth Hagin, Bennie Hinn, Cindy Jacobs, etc. teach? The very real fact of the matter is - if you know anything about these people - you know that NONE of them would have much trouble in subscribing to what David Ricardo (who with Adam Smith and the Rev. Thomas Malthus is considered to be one of the founding ideologues of the capitalist system) said about the poor when he taught -

"Someone who lacks independent wealth has no claim to even the SMALLEST portion of food ..." [Please see our article, Capitalism and Christianity."]

What an unconscionable and WICKED twisting of the Scriptures! - and it is PRECISELY this kind of depraved teaching that the elites have used to taint and besmirch the environmentalist movement today, and all the while having the gall to label what they are doing "Christian." And our church leaders not only let the elites get away with all this, they actually participate in the persecution of these people and encourage their parishioners to "get in on the action" as well. It seems that there is nothing our church leaders won't do for their PAYMASTERS; but, then, that's what WHORES (Rev. 17:1) do.

In bending to the will of the elites in this fashion, the leaders of the church have become the elite's apologists; their "excuse-givers." And what a pathetic lot they all are - Paul and Jan Crouch, Charles Stanley, D. James Kennedy, Tim LaHaye, the late John Wimber, Juan Carlos Ortiz, C. Peter Wagner, Beverley LaHaye, Ern Baxter, Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth Hagin, Oral and Richard Roberts, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Chuck Colson, Robert Stearns, Mike Bickle, Reuven Doron, Che Ahn, Frank Hammond, Cindy Jacobs, Bill Hamon, John Eckhardt, Bobbie Byerly, Dutch Sheets, Jim Goll, John Paul Jackson, James Ryle, Frank Damazio, Ed Silvoso, Carlos Annacondia, Claudio Freidzon, Roger Mitchell, Ted Haggart, Paul Cain, Chuck Pierce, Rick Joyner, Kingsley Fletcher, Jim Laffoon, Barbara Wentroble, ad infinitum.

SNAKES IN THE GRASS

These HYPOCRITES! These "snakes in the grass" who twist the Word of God to justify the crimes of the elite. Well did Jesus say of them:

"Woe unto you ... HYPOCRITES! for ye are like unto whited sepulchers (tombs), which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

"Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity ...

"Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers (poisonous SNAKES) ..." (Matt. 23:27-28, 33)

"POPPING" THOSE WHO GET IN THEIR WAY

All this brings us back to the FBI's desire to "POP" Dave Foreman and others connected to the environmental movement. You're surprised? Well, you shouldn't be. This kind of criminality follows naturally in the wake of all those who serve the elites. But it should have nothing to do with the "people of God."

Nonetheless, the fact that the church's richy-rich allies and the rich's lackeys in the government (i.e., the CIA, the FBI, the DEA, etc.) are deeply involved in this kind of activity flows right on past most Christians today. It doesn't seem to phase them anymore; it rolls off them like water off a duck's back. Or maybe you think that the FBI didn't really mean what it plainly said? - that the word "pop" means something else? Or maybe you think that we are making all this up? But if you do, you are surely a simpleton and a naïf. "Popping" people who get in their way is what the elites do when they can't use the court system against them; when they have nothing criminally on their enemies, or it's too dangerous to pursue them in court. They've been "popping" people for years now. This is the kind of evil that greed and "money-grubbing" generates. The Bible wasn't kidding around when it said:

"The love of money is the root of ALL evil ..." (1 Tim. 6:10) [Please see our articles, "MK-Ultra and the Search for the Manchurian Candidate" and "Conspiracies Theories."]

THE FBI HAD NOTHING ON FOREMAN

The fact is, the FBI never really had anything on Foreman or any of the other members of Earth First - at least nothing that would hold up in court - or do you really think that the FBI would be talking about "popping" Foreman if they did? Come on now, if the FBI really had something on Forman, why not bring him in? Why not just arrest him? Isn't that what our law enforcement agencies are supposed to do? - unless, as we just indicated, they had nothing on him; or - maybe, as we alluded to earlier - they believed that a public trial would be too embarrassing? One of the two.

But if that's the case - i.e., that the FBI was planning to "pop" Foreman - one has to ask, what's the difference between the United States and the old Soviet Union? [NOTE: Foreman was eventually arrested in connection with an alleged plot to sabotage power lines in Arizona. However, the litigation ended abortively in mid-trial in 1991 when evidence surfaced to the effect that the FBI had been planning to murder Foreman all along. It's so much easier just to kill someone like Foreman than to bring him to trial. See what happens? - too much "dirty laundry" tends to get exposed. There's too much risk that the FBI will be exposed for what it really is - a "hand-maiden" to the elites, and a very ruthless (if sometimes clumsy) one at that.]

No doubt, there are those who are reading this material who will say, I've never run across this kind of thing in my experience. Maybe. But one has to ask, What in YOUR experience would have ever led YOU to cross swords with the FBI? Are you an activist in the environmental movement? Are you a left-winger? Have you actively - and I mean ACTIVELY - opposed the economic policies of the elites? If not, then, how would you know?

SENDING A MESSAGE

The "showcase" trial that the FBI had planned for Foreman had fallen apart. They had been embarrassed - and the FBI does not suffer embarrassment lightly. They needed another "patsie" through which they could send a "message" to the environmentalists: Don't mess with us or the people for whom we are "carrying water." That's where Judi and Darryl came in.

Sending "messages" to the enemies of those the FBI stands guard over (i.e., America's elites) is part of the FBI's raison d'etrat, and, except on rare occasions (for instance, with Foreman above), it is a subtle skill that the FBI over the years has raised to an "art form." It involves anything and everything that - once again, in the words of the directive authorizing the FBI's COINTELPRO program - "DISRUPTS, MISDIRECTS, DISCREDITS, or otherwise NEUTRALIZES" the activities of those who oppose the elites' political or economic agendas.

AND WHAT A CRUEL AND RUTHLESS MESSAGE IT IS: We know who you are, we can ruin your reputation, we can ruin your marriage, we can see that you are fired from your job, we can make people avoid you like the plague; in short, we can make life utterly miserable for you; we can arrest you on trumped up charges, and, if we have to, we can even kill you! - or what other meaning would you give to the word "neutralize" in the directive that authorized COINTELPRO? That's certainly the message that the FBI delivered to Martin Luther King in 1964: Commit suicide or else! So now the FBI was sending a message to Dave Forman and the members of Earth First: We missed you the first time, but we have the power and stamina to keep on coming: take careful note of what we are doing to Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney.

THE PLOT THICKENS

When Judi's and Darryl's lawyers were finally able to inspect the car some time after the assassination attempt, and later - when they gained access to the evidence photos - it became clear that the bomb had been located UNDER, not behind, the driver's seat, which told Bari's and Cherney's lawyers that the FBI had been blatantly fabricating a case against the two; a "showcase trial" like the kind Stalin used in the old Soviet Union. The driver's seat had a large hole in it through which the pavement below was clearly visible. The floorboard of the car contained a much larger, diamond-shaped hole, with the wide spot directly UNDER the seat.

The back seat, just above where Agent Doyle - Held's obedient, little servant - said the bomb had been placed, was unscathed except for a tear along the seam of the seat cover. The rear door, just next to where Agent Doyle said the bomb was placed, was only superficially damaged.

In contrast, the driver's door was bowed out and mangled, with a corresponding bulge in the car frame. The first fireman on the scene - who with his comrades had heard the explosion at their station a block away - testified that the rear door on the driver's side opened normally, permitting him to step inside and hold Judi's head and neck still in order to prevent any further spinal injury.

Conversely, rescuers had to use the "jaws of life" to cut away the mangled driver's door in order to extract her.

MORE FABRICATIONS

Thus it was obvious that from the very start the investigators must have known that the bomb was hidden under the driver's seat by someone who intended to harm Judi. And these very obvious facts could have been confirmed by anyone who had taken the time to speak to the orthopedist who had attended to her at the hospital, now the chief orthopedic surgeon there. He knew what had happened; he knew from her injuries, as he easily demonstrated with x-rays at the trial, that the force of the explosion had come up from below, shattering her pelvis, destroying her coccyx, tearing her colon and permanently injuring organs and nerves in the region and along her right leg. He testified, however, that no investigator came to him to ask about her injuries. Obviously - very obviously - the FBI was concocting a frame-up - and to say that it was anything else but a frame-up is just plain nuts.

And what a screwed up frame-up it was - mainly because there was never that much for the FBI to work with around which they could "manufacture" a case against Judi and Darryl. Indeed, it was full of easily penetrated fabrications to support the central lie that the bomb had been in plain view, all of which had been incorporated into their request for a warrant to search Darryl's and Judi's homes the night of the attempted assassination, with the media in tow.

The warrant application included, in particular, an assertion ascribed to Held's "go-fer" (i.e., Agent Doyle) that the nails taped around the bomb - "for shrapnel effect" - were "identical" to the nails found in a bag in the hatchback area of the car. This "persuasive detail" was another OUTRIGHT LIE - the third out-and-out, straightforward fabrication connected to the investigation.

As with the other lies, this was not a simple mistake; an innocent misunderstanding of the facts, or a sincere error on the part of the FBI - it was a lie. There were in fact two bags of nails in the car, with other materials from Judi's job as a carpenter, but both were plainly different from those recovered in the bombing debris. The nails taped to the bomb were long finishing nails. The nails in bags were roof tacks and sinkers, both with heads. THIS DIDN'T COME TO LIGHT, HOWEVER, BECAUSE THE BAGS WERE HELD BACK FROM THE EVIDENCE - along with the cushion from the back seat and other significant items.

MORE LIES, MORE DISSIMULATIONS

Meanwhile, Oakland police officers contributed their own lies to the effect that Judi's and Darryl's associates had told them the pair had a reputation for violence - which they fabricated out of thin air in order to support what the FBI had earlier alleged, WHEN IN FACT THE OFFICERS WERE TOLD THE EXACT OPPOSITE. And, again, as with the other lies, this lie was not the result of a mistake on the part of the police; no innocent finagling of what they heard; again, it was a lie made up out of "whole cloth." The fact is, when Judi's and Darryl's defense team interviewed those people the police said had told them that they (i.e., Judi and Darryl) were violent people, the defense team learned that they had told the police the exact opposite, and that they were willing to testify to that fact in open court.

My heavens! Think about that: such blatant, open lying about the facts in the case. Think about what that might mean to those who run afoul of the law, which may happen to you someday if you decide to oppose what the elites' are up to - AND, AGAIN, YOU MUST IF YOU CALL YOURSELF A CHRISTIAN, at least insofar as the elites' desire to connect themselves to the church. If you allow such a connection to stand - or at least to go unchallenged - you will pay for it someday, maybe not in this life, but surely in the life-to-come.

THE FOREST FOREVER INITIATIVE

Still, even as the FBI's case began to fall apart and it became apparent that it had been fabricated, the FBI persisted. The elites for whom the FBI was carrying water insisted that they do so. And why was that? - because looming in the background at the time was a popular state-wide ballot initiative called "Forest Forever" (Proposition 130), which called for a radical revision of the rules governing timber "harvesting" in California. At the time of the bombing, the initiative enjoyed broad-based support. After the bombing, however, Hill & Knowlton sprang into action and branded "Forests Forever" the "Earth First initiative," and slick signs and fliers (which Hill and Knowlton bought and paid for) appeared "magically" all over the state urging votes against the so-called "bombers proposition."

As a result, the measure lost by 1.5 percent of the vote. Only 1.5 percent of the vote! - and, sadly, you can believe that evangelical Christians, like the good little stooges they are, provided the tie-breaking votes.

It has been estimated, that the failure of the initiative on the November ballot that year yielded Hurwitz and Merlo almost $3 billion in revenues above and beyond what they would have made had the initiative passed.

IN THE END, IT WAS ALL ABOUT MONEY

In the end, it was all about money - over $3 billion. For the sake of "filthy lucre" (I Tim. 3:3, I Tim. 3:8, Titus 1:7, I Pet. 5:2) people were framed and locked up in jail; their reputations were ruined; they were run off the road; others were actually targeted for assassination. In short, and in the words of the COINTELPRO directive, the lives of a large number of folks - people who had irritated the elites or who had gotten in their way - were "discredited;" their activities "disrupted" and "misdirected;" and some (Judi Bari, Darryl Cherney, and Dave Foreman) were actually targeted for "neutralization" (i.e., assassination).

All of this is plain enough to see; but most Christians in America don't see it because deep down in their hearts there is a "simpatico" between Christians and the elites insofar as their "love of money" is concerned, together with a concomitant bias against the poor of this world - even though the situation of most Christians in the United States and that of the elites they so slavishly serve is separated by a huge economic gulf that Christians will never under any circumstances be able to bridge. Still, they hope! - and that hope cannot help but draw them irresistibly away from Christ and toward those who hate Him. Jesus said:

"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon" (i.e., money). (Matt. 6:24)

That's NO MAN, Brothers and sisters, NO MAN! Believe me when I say that the Bible wasn't kidding around when it said:

"The love of money is the root of ALL evil ..." (1 Tim. 6:10)

Of course, most Christians kid themselves with regard to their "love affair" with money. They think they are above all that. But how they spend their money gives the lie to where their hearts really are: the fact of the matter is, most of them spend their money only on themselves and very little of it, in the sum total of things, goes to the Lord.

Some, of course, say, "I can't afford to give." But such a statement is a sham. What they mean is that they can afford to pay their rent, buy food, pay the gas and the electric bills, make payments on their cars, keep up the payments on their visa and mastercards, pay to get on the internet, afford a computer, etc. - but they can't afford to give to the Lord; maybe a little, but not much.

Well, do you know what that means? - it means THAT GOD IS LAST PLACE IN THEIR LIVES. No matter how spiritual they appear, no matter how much "time" they give to the Lord, no matter how many people they counsel, no matter how often they preach the Gospel - GOD IS STILL LAST PLACE IN THEIR LIVES. People, of course, can get mad at us for saying this, but remember, it's not Antipas with whom they someday will have to reckon, it's God. It's God to whom they will have to someday give an account, and they will have to do so in light of the poor widow who "gave all she had" - one penny - for the Kingdom of God's sake. (cf. Mark 12:42-44)

It's this "love of money" - which Christians in this country deny, but is so plainly a part of their lives - that has blinded them to what's occurring! - and that's precisely why the alliance between themselves and the elites seems so natural, and it's the reason that they find themselves so often on opposite sides with the poor - to say nothing of totally misconstruing what the Judi Baris, the Darryl Cherneys and the Dave Foremans of this world are all about. These are the people who are really open to the Lord, not the Charlie Hurwitzes and Harry Merlos of the earth. Jesus meant it when He said,

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." (Matt. 19:24)

Brothers and sisters, it is now the "end of days." Don't let your "love of money" get in the way of what God has called you to do. We are now very, very close to the end. Now is the time to "spend yourself" on God. Jesus said:

"Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life." (Matt. 19:29)

EPILOGUE

On July 17, 1990, the Alameda County District Attorney announced that he would not pursue the case, because there was NO evidence at all connecting Judi or Darryl to the bombing. This was confirmed when the FBI brought a high-level bomb expert to Oakland from its Washington DC Crime Lab, to inspect the bombed car first-hand. They were blindsided by his testimony; he turned out to be an honest man; a man of integrity!

Dennis Cunningham and Ben Rosenfeld - Judi's and Darryl's lawyers - explain what happened:

"This agent, David R. Williams, quickly pointed out the obvious to the assembled investigators: The pipe bomb had sat crosswise under the driver's seat, and was covered with a blue towel in any case, so it was not in plain view at all. Its end caps had flown off sideways in the explosion and left "impact points" in the frame of the car, marking exactly where the pipe had been located. Agent Williams confirmed that any competent bombing investigator would have known this. He also confirmed the presence of the motion trigger device (a ball bearing set in a depression in the masonite base the pipe and circuitry were mounted on, designed to bounce up and contact live wires crossed above it, completing a circuit), and later testified that the bomb had 'functioned as designed'.

"In 1991, Judi and Darryl filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the police and the FBI. They named various FBI agents and Oakland police officers in a lawsuit charging unlawful interference with their rights of free expression and association under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and false arrest and illegal search and seizure under the Fourth Amendment. After six weeks of trial, and seventeen days of deliberation, the jury sustained most of these claims and awarded the plaintiffs a total of $4.4 million in compensation and punitive damages.

"The jury - two men and eight women, two Blacks and eight Whites, two city dwellers and eight suburbanites - had not, by and large, confronted police repression in their own lives. The court barred the plaintiffs from putting on evidence of COINTELPRO, the secret persecution of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) and other groups and individuals active in the Central American solidarity ("Sanctuary") movement, the hiding of the evidence against the Birmingham church bombers, the murder frame-ups engineered in Boston to protect FBI Mafia informants, the false prosecution of nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee, and other FBI misdeeds throughout its long history of political repression ...

"Unlike the bust (i.e., arrest) of Judi and Darryl, however, the verdict failed to reverberate in the news from coast to coast. It was front-page news in the Bay Area, but page thirteen in the New York Times - where the bombing itself had been on page one - with one clueless follow-up article a few days later, then nothing more. Despite an unprecedented multi-million-dollar jury award against FBI agents for blatantly anti-constitutional scheming, fabrication, and false swearing, the verdict has received no mention in media accounts or assessments of recent FBI practices ...

"When COINTELPRO was exposed by the Church Committee of the U.S. Senate in the 1970s, the FBI took it off the books, but they continued to practice it. NOW - AS ASHCROFT HAS INDICATED - THEY CAN BE EXPECTED TO WRITE DOWN EVEN LESS, KEEP FEWER RECORDS, WHICH MIGHT BECOME EVIDENCE IN COURT, AND GENERALLY RATCHET UP THE SECRECY OF THE SECRET POLICE ..."
