Two Americas:
one poor, the other rich

By: SR Shearer

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Charles Dickens' famous opening line to his fictional treatment of the French Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities, applies with equal force to contemporary America. A number of recent reports document how a tiny layer of the US population has monopolized society's wealth to a degree that would have made the courtiers at Versailles blush.

-- Tom Eley

Tom Eley

TomEley, writing for Global Research, reports that -

"A March 23 study by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) concludes that the economic 'recovery' has 'proceeded on two tracks: one for typical families and workers, who continue to struggle against high rates of unemployment and continued foreclosures, and another track for the investor class and the wealthy'."

TWO TRACKS: one for average people that is leading to poverty; one for the wealthy that is leading to the accumulation of wealth at an unheard of rate. [Painting by Stephen Magsigs]

Eley continues

"The recession, which officially lasted from December 2007 to June 2009, saw the share of total household wealth going to the bottom 80 percent of the population fall by 2.2 percentage points to 12.8 percent. The wealthiest 1 percent increased its net worth to 225 times that of the typical household, the highest ratio on record.

"About one quarter of households have zero or negative wealth. With homeowners' equity down 35 percent since 2007, the banking industry now owns the majority of the nation's housing stock.

"Data gathered by economist Emanuel Saez of the University of California, Berkeley reveals that in 2008 the top one-hundredth of one percent of households—1 in 10,000—took home an average of $27 million per household, while the average for the bottom 90 percent was $31,244. The average worker earned 1/185th of the amount taken in by a typical CEO.

"According to the Congressional Budget Office, the top 1 percent of income tax filers, those who made nearly $2 million in 2007, saw their share of the national after-tax income increase by about 130 percent as compared to 1979. The bottom four quintiles saw their share decline by between 10 and 30 percent."

Karl Marx was right in assessing the condition of modern man when he wrote in Das Kapital,

"Accumulation of wealth at one pole is... at the same time accumulation of misery, agony of toil, slavery, ignorance, brutality, mental degradation at the opposite pole."

Eley concludes:

"So it is in America in the second decade of the 21st Century."

In assessing the accuracy of Marx's statement here, one is forced to conclude with Jesus,

"... the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light." (Luke 16:8)

A recent report from the Food Research and Action Center finds that a record 44.2 million people in the US, one in seven, relied on food stamp programs in 2010, up by more than 4.7 million in one year. One in five Americans struggled to find enough to eat in 2010, according to the group.

One in four US children live below the official poverty level, 16 million in all, and 1.5 million children experience homelessness each year. Untold millions of households subsist without heat, light or running water.

Eley reports that -

"This immense accumulation of wealth by a tiny share of the population alongside the impoverishment of growing sections of the working class permeates every aspect of life—economics, politics and culture. In the political arena, it expresses itself in the drive by the entire political establishment—both the Democratic and Republican parties and every level of government—to accelerate the concentration of wealth in the hands of the financial aristocracy."

Eley concludes:

"The elite's single-minded focus is to protect and expand their wealth. In the midst of the worst social crisis since the Great Depression, corporate profits shattered records in 2010, climbing to $1.68 trillion, up 36.8 percent in a year. The stock market added $1 trillion in value in 2010, and CEO pay and bonuses have climbed back to the obscene heights of the pre-crash years, paced by hedge fund manager John Paulson's $5 billion compensation last year."

The accumulation of wealth at one pole has meant the accumulation of misery, agony of toil, slavery, ignorance, brutality, mental degradation at the opposite pole. That's what Marx said, and nothing so demonstrates this fact than the misery this dynamic has unleashed on the cities of America as expressed in the manner in which they are being depopulated:

Detroit: a decline of 990,000 residents or 54% of its population.

Chicago: a decline of 945,000 residents or 26% of its population.

Cleveland: a decline of 500,000 residents or 53% of its population.

Pittsburgh: a decline of 371,000 residents or 45% of its population.

The depopulation of these cities (and others like them throughout the country) and the rot it has left behind resembles the depopulation of New Orleans after Katrina.

The depopulation of these cities is the DIRECT consequence of the elite's search for CHEAP LABOR - and one should understand that the search for cheap overseas labor does not necessarily mean cheaper prices for Americans as the elite press is fond of saying. To be sure, prices have declined, but not by that much. What's happened is that the elites are pocketing the difference between what they pay for labor in their overseas factories and what they would have paid to American workers.

Moreover, the offshoring of factory jobs to countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Thailand, Malaysia does not necessarily result in permanent jobs in these countries as the result of rising living standards. As soon as labor costs begin to rise, the elites simply fold up shop and move their factories elsewhere. This is what's happening now in Mexico as factories are closed there as a result of worker demands and moved elsewhere.

The dramatic collapse of Detroit's population, incomparable in urban history outside of war and plague, is the end result of the destruction of manufacturing in these cities.

However, it should be clearly understood that the destruction of industry and jobs in Detroit were not the result of "happenchance," but rather the result of the unmitigated GREED of America's corporate elites. Moreover, it should not - even for a moment - be thought that the elites were simply trying to compete in the so-called world market when they moved their factories overseas. THE ELITES CONTROLLED THE WORLD MARKET; if American markets were being penetrated by so-called "foreign companies" it was because the elites permitted it. The fact is, more often than not, the so-called "foreign companies" doing business in the United States had been secretly "bought up" (directly, indirectly, through the use of proxies, etc.) by America's financial elites after World War II; they were then pitted against so-called "American companies" (really American workers) in an effort to break America's unions - which by now the elites have successfully accomplished.

Detroit's industries (specifically its auto companies and related industries) were targeted with peculiar vengeance because Detroit's workers had played such a dramatic role in the struggles by workers for a better wage in the early and mid-part of the 20th century. The autoworkers in Detroit, Flint, and other industrial cities fought pitched battles to establish industrial unionism in the 1930s.

Detroit's workers had been especially militant in their effort to raise the standard of living for average workers. In 1936 and 1937, three years after the general strikes in Minneapolis, San Francisco and Toledo, auto workers in Detroit and Flint engaged in the great sit-down strikes, fighting off what were then the most powerful corporations in the world, chasing the rotten craft unions out of the plants, and establishing industrial unionism. This elevated working class living standards in Detroit, Pontiac and Flint to some of the highest in the world, and workers all across the country sought to emulate the achievements of the Michigan workers.

Union workers and sympathizers march toward a rally in Detroit's Cadillac Square in early 1937. The fledgling United Auto Workers were striking General Motors plants in Flint and other locations, and were encouraged when the Detroit rally drew 150,000 supporters.

The American elites never reconciled themselves to this state of affairs, and they immediately sought out ways to scale back the union power of Detroit workers by moving their factories out of Detroit:

And in all of this, the workers of Detroit were left to face the elite's onslaught alone because their so-called "union bosses" joined with the elites to connive and scheme against the workers. Specifically, the United Auto Workers (UAW), which is headquartered in Detroit, conspired with the Big Three (General Motors, Ford and Chrysler) to single out for closure factories with the most militant workers, and since the 1980s, it has worked hand-in-glove with the auto bosses to impose pay and benefit cuts. Eley reports that the UAW is now little more than an arm of management, with financial interests diametrically opposed to those of the workers it nominally represents. [We urge you to see our article on the way which the UAW and other union bosses worked with the elites to not only break militant workers in this country, but abroad as well, "The AFL-CIO and Death Squads;" please also see our article, "The Elites Want High Unemployment."]

America's labor unions were long ago taken over by America's business elites and made "team-players" in the effort by these elites to enrich themselves.

The best that could be said of the so-called "union bosses" is that after watching the government destroy the Teamsters and put Jimmy Hoffa into jail (and later assassinated), as well as observing the manner in which the elites successfully conspired to assassinate Joseph Yablonski of the United Mine Workers, most of America's union bosses allowed themselves to be "bought-off." Better that than being murdered.

Still, the capitulation of America's so-called "union bosses" to the dictates of America's business elites is shocking and difficult to comprehend, and perhaps can only be understood by resort to Hannah Arendt's phrase, "THE BANALITY OF EVIL" - that is to say, in the end it can only be understood if one realizes the trite truth that, everyone who is OUTSIDE of Christ puts himself and his personal interests above others; so it was with the so-called union bosses.

"… they that will be rich fall into

Still, the GREED of the elites remains insatiable. As the research done at Boston College's Center on Wealth and Philanthropy shows, the elites remain preoccupied with the inadequacy of their vast fortunes. "Most of them still do not consider themselves financially secure," writes the Atlantic's Graeme Wood in "Secret Fears of the Super-Rich." AND SO THE DRIVE FOR MORE AND MORE "THINGS" AMONG THE ELITES CONTINUES UNABATED. It cannot be satiated; it cannot be whetted.

The Bible was right when it said:

"... they that will be rich fall into TEMPTATION and a SNARE, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in DESTRUCTION and PERDITION [see what happened to Nelson Rockefeller, NOTE below]

The elites on bended knees to the power of their desires - desires that CANNOT be satiated; CANNOT be controlled; CANNOT be whetted.

"For the love of money is the root of ALL evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

And the Bible goes on to say regarding the rich:

"Their future is ... LOSS ... [for] all they think about is this life here on earth." [Phil. 3:19 (Amp.)]

"ALL THEY THINK ABOUT IS THIS LIFE ON EARTH!" - and that's precisely what it takes to accumulate wealth in this life. The fact is, the amassing of wealth does not come easily, nor does it come accidentally; it requires a great deal of time and effort to get; and more than that, once it's acquired, it requires a great deal of effort to keep.

SLAVES - that's what the elites are - SLAVES TO THEIR CARNAL APPETITES; the desire for more and more and more!

The elites are totally incapable of turning these appetites off; of reigning them in - and so they continue piling up ever more wealth and indulging in more and more pleasures, AND THE COST TO AVERAGE AMERICANS IN INCREASED RATES OF POVERTY AND HOMELESSNESS IS ENORMOUS.

NOTE: I never cease to be amazed at those Christians who - when confronted with the kind of sexual depictions we occasionally use on this website to indicate the POWER and REALITY of seduction - are shocked by our "visual aides." They make a show of turning away in disgust at the imagery; but these same Christians show no similar inclination when confronted with the hideous nature of money - AND THIS DESPITE THE FACT THAT JESUS HIMSELF COMPARED OUR DEVOTION TO MONEY WITH DEVOTION TO THE DEVIL:

"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. YE CANNOT SERVE GOD AND MAMMON." (Matthew 6:24)

And believe me when I say, the more money one has, the more enslaved one will become to sin - the kind of sin that leads one to the very precincts of hell: for example, take how enslaved Nelson Rockefeller, one of the richest men on earth at the time of his death, was to his CARNAL appetites when it was revealed that he had died under the whip of a DOMINATRIX named Megan Marshak in his mansion in New York at 12:20 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 1979. The only difference between a poor man's addiction to sin and a rich man's addiction is that the rich man can hide his addiction just as Rockefeller did - that is, up until the time of his humiliating demise.

Rockefeller's townhouse

The first press reports of Rockefeller's death paid moving tribute to the hardworking GOP elder who had died at his desk while working on a book about modern art. Solemnly, Rockefeller family spokesman Hugh Morrow told reporters Rockefeller had suffered a heart attack at 10:15 Friday night in his office at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and that a security aide, the only other person present, had tried to revive him and failed.

The stricken man had been admitted to Lenox Hill Hospital at 11:15 p.m., he said, and widow Happy Rockefeller had arrived at 12:25 a.m., 10 minutes too late.

The following day, Morrow admitted he'd gotten one or two details wrong. Actually, Rockefeller had died at his 54th Street townhouse, he said. A chauffeur also had been there at the time. By now there were reports of a blonde - Megan Marshack - at Rockefeller's side when he died, and the press wanted to know about her. Well, yes, Morrow acknowledged, he had just learned that Nelson Rockefeller's young assistant also had been present when his heart gave out.

LEFT: Megan Marshack; RIGHT: Nelson Rockefeller

But, as it turned out, it wasn't Marshack who had called 911 at all. That call had been made by TV personality Ponchitta Pierce, who lived in Marshack's building and who had departed the scene before cops arrived. Marshack was gone now too, visiting friends in the country. Morrow said he didn't know where. That story too collapsed when it was learned that the Associated Press had reached Marshack by phone four hours after Rockefeller's heart stopped beating, and that she'd told the AP that Morrow was with her.

Dr. Michael Baden

Morrow clammed up altogether at this point. By now the questions were too large to contain. Why hadn't there been an autopsy? Why had Rockefeller been so quickly cremated? And who exactly was this Miss Marshack, anyway? Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau made an "informal" inquiry into the events surrounding Rockefeller's death then declined to reveal what he'd turned up. "I don't want to get into questions like that," he said. Later in 1979, Mayor Edward Koch fired chief medical examiner Michael Baden after the M.E.'s office dropped hints that Nelson Rockefeller had died while having sex - and that the sex he was having at the time of his death was of a very kinky "whip-and-leather" variety.

This kind of sexual deviancy has always been "common" in the precincts of the rich - from the palaces of the Caesars, to Versailles in France, to the "great homes" of the aristocracy in England's countryside. But it's in the United States that this phenomenon has reached a crescendo never heard of before in the history of mankind. [Please see our articles, "Witchcraft & the Paranormal" and "The Supernatural, America's Intelligence Agencies, the Republican Elites, Drugs and Pedophilia."]

The inability of the elites to reign in their CARNAL appetites and refrain from piling up ever larger amounts of wealth gives evidence to the truth of the lyric uttered by the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse:

"A measure of wheat for a penny [literally - denarius, a Greek coin which represented a WHOLE DAY'S wages], and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine." (Revelation 6:6)

NOTE: Once again we remind the reader of the meaning of this lyric: It's meaning is that the condition of man during this era (i.e., the "end of days") will be reduced to such that he will have to labor a whole day simply to buy a loaf of bread or three measures of barley. But the second part of the lyric [i.e., "... and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine ..."] means that the "hard times" of this period will not extend to the elites. This is the common interpretation - the one subscribed to by Ryrie, Pentacost, Ironside, Gaebelein, etc.

So possessed are the rich by the force of this dynamic in their lives that they have been rendered blind to the harm they are inflicting on others - to the way this dynamic is creating rot and decay in our cities.

"For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them." (Matthew 13:14-15)

When IDIOTS and DOLTS minimize the power of this dynamic they demonstrate for all to see how captured they have become by its power. To say that those who refuse to "play down" the power of this dynamic and who seek to warn others of its influence and strength are indulging in CLASS WARFARE is tantamount to revealing just how blind they have become - so that in them is fulfilled the words of Jesus when He said:

"For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them." (Matthew 13:14-15)

I tell you the truth when I say, to misapprehend the power of this dynamic - i.e., the rich / poor dynamic - is to render oneself blind to the dangers of the "end of days;" blind to the power of DECEPTION; to the warning of our Lord,

"... Take heed that no man DECEIVE you.

"For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall DECEIVE many." (Matthew 24:4-5)

I urge you with all of my heart to remember what the "end of days" is very largely all about: THE POWER OF MONEY ON A PERSON'S LIFE! - after all, isn't that what "buying and selling" is all about:

"And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

"And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

"And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

"And DECEIVETH them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

"And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

"And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

"And that no man might BUY or SELL, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." (Revelation 13:11-17)

I pray that God would open YOUR eyes to that fact!

God bless you all!

Then make copies and take these copies out to the campuses where you live; pass them out; OR if that seems too "daring" for you right now, post them on telephone poles, the sides of buildings, on campus bulletin boards; post them in union halls, in the neighborhoods of the poor and downtrodden, near employment offices, wherever you can.

Once again, we URGE you to read (or re-read):
